Set up Cloze Reader.

You will need Anki, AnkiConnect, and the correct Cloze Reader installer for your computer.

Install Anki

Download and install the current version of Anki for your computer, then open it once.

Add AnkiConnect

In Anki, choose Tools → Add-ons → Get Add-ons. Enter code 2055492159, restart Anki, and keep it open while syncing.

Choose Your Installer

Mac users can check Apple menu → About This Mac. Choose Apple silicon if the Chip says M1, M2, M3, M4, or newer; choose Intel if the Processor says Intel. The current Windows beta supports 64-bit Windows.

Install and open

Mac

Open the DMG—or unzip the download first if necessary—and drag Cloze Reader into Applications. Because this beta is not yet notarized by Apple, macOS may block its first launch.

Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, find the blocked-app message, and choose Open Anyway.

Windows

Open the downloaded installer and follow its prompts. Because this beta is not yet code-signed, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen may warn you.

If you received the installer from the Cloze Reader beta, choose More info → Run anyway. Do not bypass a warning for an installer from another source.

Connect your account

Open Cloze Reader, choose Settings → Account & Billing, and sign in or create an account. Confirm that the browser code matches the code shown in the app, approve the connection, then open Anki and select Refresh Anki.

Optional: add the Chrome extension

Still in development. The extension is distributed manually during the private beta and does not update automatically.

Download and extract the extension ZIP.
In Chrome, open chrome://extensions.
Turn on Developer mode in the upper-right corner.
Select Load unpacked and choose the extracted folder containing manifest.json.
Keep the Cloze Reader desktop app open. Open the extension toolbar, sign in, select Connect app, and approve the connection in Cloze Reader.
When the website asks, confirm that its code matches the code shown in the Chrome toolbar.

Web cards are saved to the local Web Inbox in the desktop app for review and Anki syncing.
